Keep Your Home Safe With Modern Alarm Systems

by on June 22, 2010

Every house should be equipped with modern alarm systems. From fire alarms to intruder alerts and detectors of carbon monoxide, you don’t want to be caught off guard. For those who live in regions that receive heavy rain fall and tornadoes, there are also home tornado sirens and flooding sensors that you should at least look into.

It’s advisable to connect home alarm systems to doors and windows, as these have sensitive motion detectors in them. As soon as a person enters, they will have a certain amount of time to turn off the alarm, or the police will be alerted.

A fire alarm is one of the most important alarms to get. Admittedly, some of the older types can be quite irritating. Sometimes they beep persistently when the battery’s getting low, or they go off at the slightest provocation, like when you’re cooking and there’s a little smoke. For these reasons, some people take out the battery or they simply don’t buy an alarm, but even if a fire alarm has never helped you out before, you never know when you may need one in the future.

While earlier types of alarms can be pretty vexing, modern alarms are much more convenient and sophisticated. For example, they sense movements characteristic of flames in particular, rather than reacting to a little smoke when you’re cooking. Others are activated by temperature, so they signal the fire department once the room reaches a certain temperature and the alarm then goes off. Others are activated by smoke, but only if there is a quantity substantial enough to indicate a house fire.

When it comes to intruder alerts, there are two main types. One calls the police silently, without letting an intruder know he or she has been detected. This means the person may wander through the house for a bit, so there’s a little risk involved, but also greater likelihood that he or she will be caught. If you want to play it safe however, you can go with the alarm that sounds immediately as soon as someone enters your house. The alarm will scare them off right away, putting you and your family at minimum risk.

The carbon monoxide detecting alarm is another very important one. People who forgo these alarms run the risk of being killed in their sleep. Fortunately, these alarms are inexpensive and can end up saving lives. All you do is plug it into an electrical socket and you’re set.

As mentioned above, it’s a great idea for people in flood prone areas to get a flood detector. These are typically placed in the basement. If your region sees tornadoes, you should probably consider getting a home tornado siren.

These systems are all beneficial for both businesses and homes. You may even be able to get a better deal on home insurance by providing proof of alarm systems in your house. In the end, a little expense up front can save you more in the end and give you security knowing your home is safe.
