by on October 7, 2009

You budgeted for the home dcor project and youve carted away the trash. Its now time to make the big decision ” do you hire a professional home dcor reno expert or a do it yourselfer and go it alone?

In part one of this article series, we talked about setting your budget. What you came up with is now going to have a significant effect on how you answer the next question.

Are you doing it all yourself or can you afford to hire a professional to look after the details for you?

Either way, a solid can be made for the path you choose. Unless, youre fastidious, keep in mind however that the end result often shows when a pro is involved.

Hiring a pro may be a little pricey to begin but please keep in mind that doing the job yourself could end up costing you more if you make mistakes. The mistakes also cause the job to drag on, something a professional should not let happen.

Interior Designers are different from Interior Decorators. A Designer will work with you on the overall layout and design of your home. From the layout of your bathroom to the placement of interior walls, a Designer has the knowledge of structure and construction necessary to determine how you home is laid out.

A good designer will do your color scheme, your flooring and window coverings. They often charge far more than a decorator but theyre the real deal.

If you feel that you want to re-do the entire bathroom from the ground up, for example, youll need the expertise of a Designer. They know the codes and the trades people who can ensure that you don’t have to go out and hire someone else to fix everything once the job is complete.

On the other hand, if youre not planning structural changes but, what you require is someone with an eye for color and design elements then an interior decorator is just what you need.

Professional decorators are also experts whove been trained to recognize how colors schemes and the appropriate accessories can vastly improve the look and feel of a house. Generally, these guys will recommend non structural changes.

One of the benefits of hiring a pro is the discounts theyre often able to access on items like window treatments, furniture flooring. So while it might be more money up front, it might end up being well worth it.

If your decision is to forgo the pros and do it all yourself you should still come up with a good plan. There are ways to do it even if interior design is not your cup of tea.

Heres a hint, not everyone is blessed with great taste when picking colors for rooms. The color I once painted my master bedroom was lovingly referred to afterwards for years as “baby poop green” Just the mood setter you want in the bedroom. A bit of research ahead of time pays dividends down the road.

Go out and pick up as many home dcor magazines as you can get your hands on. Clip out styles you think might be appropriate for your home then edit them down to a consistent look you can use in your house.

Youre looking for one or two themes at best. Consistency is important so pick one or max two styles and run with them throughout your home. Off-the-wall colors are fine as long as youre being consistent with them. If youre planning to sell in the near future, maybe go with more neutral colors just in case.
