Creating the Perfect Outdoor Garden Space

by on July 29, 2009

My wife and I just moved our family into a new house. It’s larger, with a huge back yard, it’s closer to work and an ideal place to raise our family. But with so much new space, we needed to go shopping. Nothing feels as empty as a house that has no personal touch.

We were pretty well covered with furnishings for the inside of our new house. But we had never had a back yard. The town house we lived in did not have an outdoor space, so we found ourselves needing just about everything for our yard, patio and deck.

Right off the bat, we wanted to get some outdoor furniture for our deck and patio. After looking at metal and plastic, we decided to go with a beautiful teak dining set, and a couple of large wicker chairs. This proved to be just the thing our space needed.

Of course, no outdoor living area is complete without outdoor lighting. We started with deck lighting. We chose beautiful solar post caps and then accented with candle lanterns for the table and a few other nooks off the deck. The warm glow of these lights makes us want to stay outside and enjoy a beautiful night.

We bought a number of large planters and assorted plant containers and flower boxes to fill in the empty corners and line the edges of the deck and patio. The plants help to create a natural wind break, and add a very finished, homey feel to our outdoor living space.

Next, we found a stunning wood arbor to serve as a transition from the patio going out into the yard. The curvature of the arch is an architectural element that I can really appreciate, and so will the flowering vines we planted beside it. Over the years, this will become a favorite center piece of our back yard.

Just past the edge of the patio and into the yard, we planted a raised garden with all the herbs and tomatoes we can possible eat in one season. Raised beds are the perfect solution for keeping maintenance at a minimum, and the recycled plastic models we went with were very earth friendly as well.

Finally, at the back of the property, we erected a large storage shed. We went larger than we thought we would need, so that we can grow into it over the years. It has ample room for a mower, and all the new yard tools I got to go out and purchase. It’s nice knowing that these investments in our new back yard space are being stored safely.
