Are Carpet Cleaning Spot Removal Products Safe?

by on May 16, 2009

Here’s the BIG thing to ask: Does it irritate your lungs or skin?

If you are using any cleaning agent that causes you to cough or makes breathing difficult, you should be wearing a respirator. Your body is telling you, “Hey I don’t want to breathe this stuff!”

You should wear gloves if your skin becomes irritated when you use the cleaning chemical. Again, your body is giving you a signal to keep you from harming yourself.

Even some of the cleaning chemicals you buy locally at your neighborhood grocery store can cause irritations. How severe of an irritation depends on your health and the sensitivity your body has to the chemical.

Often, carpet cleaning chemicals can include ammonia. Ammonia is very bad for your skin and lungs. Another very hard additive is butyl. Butyl is known to potentially cause cancer in lab animals.

Do professional carpet cleaning companies use harmful spotters?

Sometimes. This is something to check into when hiring a professional. They are prepared to remove the worst stains known to man. So they often have to use the stronger stuff. Professional carpet cleaning companies may carry stuff on their van that is much more hazardous than what you can buy yourself.

There have been reports of children getting a hold of the cleaning chemicals in a carpet cleaner’s spotting kit. Some of these children have ended up in the hospital or worse, lost their lives.

Ask the carpet cleaning company you are considering hiring if they use safe cleaning agents. All natural is best. Plus, ask if they have professional systems in place to prevent problems. Properly labeled spotter bottles are a MUST. In this area, it’s important not to skimp by hiring the cheapest carpet cleaning company in your city.

Carpet cleaning chemicals can cause irritation. But don’t forget, so can many of the cleaning agents you use in your house.

What does bleach do to your body? It can eat right through cotton and even your skin. Breathing bleach is much more hazardous than most carpet spotting agents. And most homes use bleach every day for washing clothes and cleaning. Be careful.

In every occasion possible, use cleaning agents that are all natural. But when severe stains occur, all natural cleaning agents won’t always solve your problem. In this event, you may need to use a stronger chemical. Only get out the big guns when it’s absolutely necessary.

The next time you get out a bottle of carpet spot remover, consider your health. Also consider the environment. Use natural products when possible.
